Clean It Yourself?

If you'd rather clean your computer free of virus or spyware infections on your own, we have some suggestions.

AVG offers virus removals tools. These scanners are free to download, but they are designed for specific infections. They may only be useful if you know what has infected your computer.

McAfee, Inc. offers the McAfee Stinger Removal Tool. This tool does not replace protective anti-virus software, but it is designed to eliminate certain common viruses.

Malwarebytes Corporation offers a program called Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. This is a free malware scanner and removal program that you can download and install.

Safer Networking Ltd. offers a program called Spybot Search & Destroy. This is a free spyware scanner and removal program that you can download and install.

ESET has a free online scanner. This scanner has a comprehensive set of virus definitions, and an effective file removal system.

Emsi Software offers a program called a-squared Free. This is a free trojan and spyware scanner and removal tool that you can download and install.

Safe Mode Instructions: If you can't remove viruses or spyware found on your computer, starting the computer in Safe Mode and running a virus scan could fix your problem. Follow thees steps to remove malicious software in Safe Mode:

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Continually press the F8 key until you reach the boot menu with a number of options.
  3. Choose Safe Mode from the options menu. (Use the arrow and enter keys to make your selection.)
  4. Once the computer has entered Windows, a warning screen will pop up alerting you to the fact that you have started the computer in Safe Mode. Click 'Yes' since this is what you want to do.
  5. Once the computer has finished booting up into Windows, run the scans on your hard drive.
  6. When this has finished, restart your computer normally and Windows will boot up normally.
