Wireless Network Registration System

A new network registration system is in effect for all users on campus to connect to the 'UWEC" wireless network. This 'UWEC' network can be used across all of campus, including the Residence Halls. More information on how to register your wireless device can be found here:

New Ethernet Port Activation Policy

Planning on bringing a desktop computer, gaming console or Internet TV to your dorm room this year? Starting this Fall, all Ethernet (wired) ports in Residence Hall rooms will only be activated upon request. This is for wired use only, it has nothing to do with your wireless connection on the UWEC network. If you know you'll be needing an Ethernet port activated for this school year, please request to have a port activated prior to arriving to campus.   Housing & Residence Life allows one port to be activated per student.

Computing on Campus Orientation Session

During New Student Orientation, representatives from the ResCom Help Desk were present to give a presentation and answer questions about Campus Computing.

A list of resources from the Campus Computing Orientation Session information can be found on the Orientation page.

Information regarding Wireless Internet access in the Residence Halls

All student rooms in the residence halls, as well as lobbies, lounges, and common areas are covered for wireless Internet access on the "UWEC" campus network.

Please do not set up personally owned wireless routers or access points in your residence hall room. Doing so could interfere with UW-Eau Claire's wireless network.

Any active personal wireless routers or access points identified will be suppressed and your Internet access de-activated by our management team.

We encourage those who have desktop computers, gaming consoles and other non-mobile devices to use your Ethernet (LAN) ports in your room. Ethernet ports in your room can be requested to be activated at our port activation form.

On The Hub Software Store

UWEC On the Hub Software Download Center, it is possible for individuals with UW-Eau Claire accounts to install Microsoft products on their personal computers for free (or at a low cost).

Copyright Violations

UW-Eau Claire takes copyright issues seriously and a file sharing policy is in place. Both the RIAA and MPAA have stepped up their search for illegally obtained music and movies. These organizations often target students on college campuses. To avoid any possible legal trouble, please use a legal source for online content. EDUCAUSE maintains a comprehensive list of legal sources of online content.

Computer Lab Information

Have you ever wondered which computer labs have computers available? How about whether or not a computer has a software package you are looking to use? You can find all of this information and more at the Learning Spaces Computer Lab website at http://spaces.uwec.edu/.

Emails Requesting Your Personal Information

This is a friendly reminder to never respond to an email that requests your password or PIN. Several UW-Eau Claire students have fallen victim to emails requesting their personal information.

None of the UW-Eau Claire computer systems, or UW-Eau Cliare computer administrators or technicians, will ever ask you for your UW-Eau Claire password or PIN, especially via phone or email. Your password and PIN should only be known by you, and you should change it frequently.

If you receive an email requesting your password, please delete it immediately. More information on passwords.

Need Anti-Virus?

Due to budgetary constraints, UW-Eau Claire no longer offers an anti-virus product for students. However, there are several free anti-virus products we recommend to students, such as Panda Cloud Antivirus, AVG Anti-Virus, and Avast Anti-Virus.

There are also a number of free anti-spyware and anti-malware programs we recommend, such as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybot Search and Destroy.
